RRB ALP 2026: 11,127 Railway Vacancies — Complete Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Salary and Preparation Strategy
RRB ALP 2026 is one of the largest active railway recruitment opportunities in India this year. The Railway Recruitment Board released CEN 01/2026 on May 14, 2026, announcing 11,127 vacancies for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot across all 17 railway zones and 21 regional RRBs. The online application window closed on June 14, 2026, and candidates who have successfully registered are now in the preparation phase ahead of the Computer Based Test expected in August 2026.
This definitive guide covers every verified aspect of the recruitment — the exam pattern changes introduced this year, the five-stage selection process, the salary structure, career progression, and the complete preparation strategy for CBT 1.
Why RRB ALP Is One of India’s Most Respected Railway Careers
The Assistant Loco Pilot is among the most operationally critical positions in Indian Railways. ALPs are directly responsible for the safe operation of trains, assisting the Loco Pilot in monitoring gauges, controls, and technical equipment, attending to minor locomotive repairs, calling out signals once sighted, and adhering to all railway safety protocols during every journey.
This responsibility comes with commensurate job security, structured pay progression, excellent non-monetary benefits, and a career ladder that extends from ALP through Loco Pilot (Goods), Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), Senior Loco Pilot, and ultimately Loco Supervisor or Loco Inspector — a complete 25-year career trajectory within Indian Railways.
Vacancy Details and Distribution
The total of 11,127 vacancies under CEN 01/2026 is distributed across 17 railway zones including Central Railway, Eastern Railway, Northern Railway, Southern Railway, Western Railway, and all other zones. Category-wise distribution follows government reservation norms for UR, SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and EWS categories as specified in the official notification PDF available on each regional RRB website.
Candidates who applied were required to choose only one regional RRB. Candidates who applied to multiple RRBs face automatic disqualification — this rule is strictly enforced.
Eligibility Criteria — Educational and Age Requirements
Educational Qualification:
CEN 01/2026 is open to candidates with the following qualifications:
Option 1: Matriculation or SSLC pass from a recognised board, plus an ITI certificate from a recognised institution in any of the following relevant trades — Armature and Coil Winder, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Fitter, Heat Engine, Instrument Mechanic, Machinist, Mechanic Diesel, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Millwright Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic Radio and TV, Refrigeration and AC Mechanic, Tractor Mechanic, Turner, or Wireman.
Option 2: Matriculation plus completion of a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the trades listed above.
Option 3: A 3-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering from a recognised institution.
Option 4: A Degree in Engineering (B.Tech or B.E.) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering from a recognised university.
Candidates who are awaiting results of their final examination are not eligible — the qualification must be complete and the result must be available at the time of application.
Age Limit:
The minimum age is 18 years and the maximum is 30 years as on July 1, 2026. Age relaxation applies as per government norms: SC and ST candidates receive 5 years, OBC-NCL candidates receive 3 years, PwBD candidates receive 10 years, and Ex-Servicemen receive relaxation as per the applicable Railways Act provisions.
There is no limit on the number of attempts for RRB ALP — candidates can appear as many times as they wish until they exceed the upper age limit.
Aadhaar Verification Requirement:
Candidates are required to verify their primary details using Aadhaar during the application process. The name and date of birth in Aadhaar must match exactly with the 10th Standard or SSLC certificate. Non-Aadhaar verified applications undergo special detailed scrutiny at every stage of the recruitment process, causing delays.
Key Change in CBT 1 Pattern for 2026
This year’s notification introduced a notable change to the CBT 1 examination structure. The General Awareness section has been removed from CBT 1. The examination now consists of three subjects only: Mathematics, Mental Ability and Reasoning, and General Science.
Despite this change, the total number of questions (75), maximum marks (75), and exam duration (60 minutes) remain unchanged. Negative marking of 1/3 mark applies for each wrong answer.
Minimum qualifying marks for CBT 1: UR and EWS — 40%; OBC-NCL and SC — 30%; ST — 25%. CBT 1 marks are used only for shortlisting to CBT 2 and are not counted in final merit ranking.
Complete Selection Process — Five Stages
Stage 1 — CBT 1 (Screening, Expected August 2026):
75 questions, 75 marks, 60 minutes. Subjects: Mathematics, Mental Ability and Reasoning, General Science. Negative marking: 1/3 per wrong answer. Purpose: Shortlist candidates for CBT 2. CBT 1 marks are not added to merit.
Stage 2 — CBT 2 (Merit Stage):
Part A: 100 questions in 90 minutes. Covers Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, and General Awareness and Current Affairs. Negative marking 1/3 per wrong answer. Part B: 75 questions in 60 minutes. Trade-specific questions from ITI or Diploma subject. Part B is strictly qualifying — minimum 35% required to pass. Part B marks are not added to merit. Part A marks determine the CBT 2 merit list.
Stage 3 — Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT):
This psychological aptitude test assesses mental alertness, decision-making ability, concentration, and reaction time — skills directly required for the safety-critical ALP role. There is no negative marking in CBAT. Minimum qualifying score applies.
Stage 4 — Document Verification:
Candidates shortlisted from CBAT are called for document verification at the concerned RRB. Original certificates, category certificates, and identity documents must be produced.
Stage 5 — Medical Examination:
ALPs must satisfy the A-1 medical standard prescribed by Indian Railways — the most stringent medical standard in the railway service. This includes specific vision requirements, including no colour blindness, and physical fitness standards. The medical examination is mandatory and is conducted by Railway Medical Officers.
Salary Structure and Career Benefits
The starting basic pay for an Assistant Loco Pilot is Rs. 19,900 per month under Level 2 of the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix. Along with the basic pay, selected candidates receive:
Dearness Allowance revised twice annually, House Rent Allowance based on city of posting, Running Allowance calculated on the basis of kilometres operated per month (this allowance is unique to running staff and significantly increases total compensation), Transport Allowance, and New Pension Scheme contributions at 10% of basic pay with government contribution.
The total monthly in-hand salary including all applicable allowances ranges from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 35,000 depending on the railway zone of posting and applicable deductions.
Additional benefits include free or highly concessional railway travel passes for the employee and family (one of the most valued perks of railway employment), government medical facilities, annual increments, and access to Railway schools and hospitals in residential colonies.
Preparation Strategy for CBT 1 — Based on 2026 Revised Pattern
Since the General Awareness section has been removed from CBT 1, all 75 questions now come from three subjects. This simplifies preparation significantly and allows focused study.
Mathematics (approximately 20–25 questions):
Number system, simplification and BODMAS, fractions and decimals, LCM and HCF, percentages, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time-speed-distance, mensuration (area and perimeter of basic shapes), and basic algebra. All topics are at Class 10 standard. Practice 30 questions daily under timed conditions — 1 question per 45 seconds is the target speed.
Mental Ability and Reasoning (approximately 25–30 questions):
Number series, letter series, analogies (both letter and word), coding and decoding, blood relations, directions and distances, Venn diagrams, classification and odd one out, syllogism, and seating arrangements. Reasoning is the highest-scoring section for well-prepared candidates. Daily practice of 40 questions in 35 minutes builds the required speed and accuracy.
General Science (approximately 20–25 questions):
Physics: mechanics (force, work, energy, motion), electricity and magnetism, optics, heat and thermodynamics basics. Chemistry: elements, compounds and mixtures, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, environmental chemistry. Biology: cell biology basics, human body systems (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous), common diseases and nutrition. All content is at Class 9 and 10 NCERT standard.
Preparation timeline for August CBT 1 (approximately 8 weeks from today):
Weeks 1–2: Foundation revision of all three subjects. Complete NCERT Class 9 and 10 science topics. Build mathematics formula sheets. Week 3–4: Daily chapter-wise practice — 100 questions daily across all three subjects with immediate error review. Weeks 5–6: Full mock tests — two per week in 60-minute timed conditions. Identify and close weak areas between mocks. Weeks 7–8: Daily mocks with answer analysis. Current affairs daily reading (relevant to General Awareness in CBT 2 preparation as well). Pre-exam preparation and document organising.
The RRB ALP 2026 CBT 1 exam is expected in August. With a focused 8-week preparation strategy, the revised and simplified CBT 1 pattern is achievable for candidates with solid Class 10-level mathematics and science knowledge.
