The Union Public Service Commission has officially released the UPSC Notification 2026 on 4th February 2026, announcing 933 vacancies across IAS, IPS, IFS, and other central services. The Preliminary Examination is scheduled for 24th May 2026, and the Mains Examination will commence from 21st August 2026.

Eligibility Criteria — Check Before You Appear
Educational Qualification: Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university established by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India, or a university deemed to be a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Final-year undergraduate students can apply for the Preliminary stage but must provide proof of graduation before the Main examination. If they fail to produce the degree, their candidature will be cancelled.
Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and must not have attained the age of 32 years as on 1st August 2026. This means candidates must have been born between 2nd August 1994 and 1st August 2005.
Age Relaxation:
- SC/ST: 5 years (upper age limit: 37 years)
- OBC: 3 years (upper age limit: 35 years)
- PwBD: 10 years (upper age limit: 42 years for General)
Attempts: General/EWS category candidates are allowed a maximum of 6 attempts. OBC candidates get 9 attempts. SC/ST candidates have unlimited attempts within the age limit.
Salary — What an IAS Officer Earns

UPSC CSE 2026 Exam Pattern
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (May 24, 2026) The UPSC CSE Prelims consists of two papers — General Studies Paper I and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) Paper II — conducted on the same day in offline mode. The Prelims serves as a screening test and marks are not counted in the final merit list.
- GS Paper I: 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours. Covers history, geography, polity, economy, environment, science & technology, and current affairs. Negative marking of ⅓ mark per wrong answer.
- CSAT Paper II: 80 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours. Covers reading comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, basic numeracy, and English comprehension. Qualifying paper — minimum 33% (66 marks) required to have GS Paper I evaluated.
Stage 2: Main Examination (August 21, 2026 onwards) Nine descriptive papers including Essay, GS I–IV, Optional Subject Paper I and II, and two language papers. Total marks: 1,750 (excluding language papers). This stage determines your final rank.
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview) 275 marks. Conducted by UPSC board members. Tests analytical ability, awareness, communication, and leadership potential. Final selection is based on Mains + Interview marks combined.
The 22-Day Prelims Strategy — Starting Today
With May 24 exactly 22 days away, here is a realistic, high-impact study plan:
Days 1–5 (May 2–6): Current Affairs Blitz Current affairs typically accounts for 20–25 questions in GS Paper I. Cover January 2026 to April 2026 daily through a trusted monthly compilation (Vision IAS, Insights on India, or ForumIAS). Focus especially on government schemes, international relations, economic data, and science & technology news.
Days 6–10 (May 7–11): Polity and Governance UPSC consistently tests Indian Constitution, Parliament, fundamental rights, directive principles, and Panchayati Raj. Revise M. Laxmikanth’s Indian Polity (selected chapters). This section is highly scorable and predictable.
Days 11–14 (May 12–15): History and Geography Modern Indian History (freedom movement, post-independence, social reforms) and Physical + Indian Geography are standard Prelims fixtures. Revise NCERT Class 11–12 Geography and Spectrum’s Modern History.
Days 15–17 (May 16–18): Economy and Environment Focus on economic concepts (GDP, inflation, monetary policy, banking), government budget highlights, environmental agreements, species in news, and sustainable development goals.
Days 18–20 (May 19–21): Full Mock Tests Take at least one full Prelims mock test daily (GS + CSAT) in timed exam conditions. Analyse every test — identify patterns in wrong answers, focus the next day’s revision on those weak areas.
Days 21–22 (May 22–23): Light Revision + Rest Review your short notes and key fact sheets only. No new topics. Sleep a full 8 hours on the night of May 23. Prepare documents, check exam centre location, set alarms.
