What Is SSC Stenographer Recruitment?

The Staff Selection Commission conducts the Stenographer exam every year to fill Grade C and Grade D positions across various Ministries, Departments, and Organisations of the Government of India. It’s one of the most sought-after central government jobs for candidates who have completed their Class 12 and want a stable, well-paying career in public service.

The SSC Stenographer Recruitment 2026 notification was released on April 24, 2026, on the official website ssc.gov.in, announcing 731 steno vacancies.

Interested candidates can apply online from April 24 to May 15, 2026 through the official SSC website. The last date to submit the application form is May 15, 2026 till 11:00 PM, and candidates can pay the fee till May 16, 2026. Mark these dates in your calendar and set reminders — missing the deadline means waiting another year.

Vacancy Details

A total of 731 vacancies have been announced for both Grade C and Grade D posts. The category-wise vacancy breakdown will be notified separately on the official SSC website.

Both Grade C (Group B Non-Gazetted) and Grade D positions are being filled under this drive, covering postings across multiple central government departments.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification: This recruitment is for 12th pass candidates looking for a stable government job. You must have passed Class 12 from a recognised Board or University. No graduation is required — making this an excellent opportunity for young candidates right after their board exams.

Age Limit: The candidate should have a minimum age of 18 years and a maximum of 30 years as on August 1, 2026. OBC candidates get 3 years of relaxation, and SC/ST candidates get 5 years. Additional relaxation is available for PwBD candidates as per government norms. Dhaarvi

Salary

Selected candidates will get a salary as per Pay Level 6 under the 7th CPC. This translates to an approximate basic pay of ₹35,400 per month for Grade C, along with all the standard government allowances including DA, HRA, and travel allowances — making the total take-home quite attractive.

Grade D positions are in Pay Level 4 with a basic pay starting at ₹25,500, again with full government benefits.

Selection Process

The selection happens in two stages:

Stage 1 — Computer Based Examination (CBE): The exam has 200 total questions — 50 from General Intelligence and Reasoning, 50 from General Awareness, and 100 from English Language and Comprehension. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. SSC has introduced sectional timings: 30 minutes each for Parts 1 and 2, and 60 minutes for Part 3.

Stage 2 — Skill Test (Stenography): Candidates who qualify the CBE are called for a shorthand skill test. For Grade C, the speed required is 100 words per minute (wpm) in stenography (English/Hindi), while Grade D requires 80 wpm. This is then transcribed on a computer.

Application Fee

For General/OBC candidates, the application fee is ₹100. SC/ST and female candidates are exempted from paying the fee. Payment is done online through the SSC portal. Dhaarvi

Tips to Start Preparing Right Now

Since the computer-based exam is scheduled for July–August 2026, you have roughly 3 months to prepare. Here’s how to use the time wisely:

  • English Language carries 100 marks — focus on grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and error spotting
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning is highly scoring if you practise regularly
  • General Awareness — follow current affairs daily and revise static GK (history, geography, polity, science)
  • Stenography Speed — start practising immediately; 80–100 wpm requires consistent daily practice

Why This Opportunity Matters

For lakhs of Indian youth — especially from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities — SSC Stenographer represents exactly what they’re looking for: a central government job, a stable salary, career security, and the pride of serving the nation. Government jobs continue to offer medical benefits, home loans, travel allowances, and retirement benefits that most private sector jobs simply don’t match at the entry level. IndGovtJobs

With only 731 vacancies and lakhs of candidates expected to apply, the competition will be intense. But with the right preparation and timely application, your chances are very real.

Apply before May 15, 2026. Don’t wait.
