  • Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) — Works under Comptroller and Auditor General; Pay Level 8 (₹47,600 basic)

Group B (Non-Gazetted) Posts:

  • Assistant Section Officer (ASO) — CSS, AFHQ, MEA, Intelligence Bureau; Pay Level 7 (₹44,900 basic)

  • Inspector (Central Excise / Customs) — CBIC field offices; Pay Level 7

  • Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) — Ministry of Statistics; Pay Level 6 (₹35,400 basic)

All posts include DA, HRA, Travel Allowance, medical benefits, and government pension — making the total compensation significantly higher than base pay figures suggest.


Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification: The SSC CGL eligibility criteria include educational qualification, age limit, age relaxation, and nationality. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or institution. Specific posts may have additional subject-related requirements, such as Statistics or Commerce.

Specific post requirements:

  • Junior Statistical Officer (JSO): Bachelor’s degree with Mathematics at 60% in Class 12, OR graduation with Statistics as a subject
  • Statistical Investigator Grade II: Graduation with Economics/Statistics/Mathematics as a compulsory/elective subject
  • All other posts: Any graduation in any stream from any recognised university

Age Limit: The age limit varies between 18 and 32 years, depending on the post. OBC candidates receive 3 years of relaxation, SC/ST candidates receive 5 years.

Post-wise age variations:

  • Most posts: 18–32 years
  • Inspector (CBI): 20–30 years
  • Assistant Audit Officer: 18–30 years
  • Tax Assistant / Senior Secretariat Assistant: 18–27 years

No limit on number of attempts: There is no specific limit on the number of attempts. A candidate can appear for the examination as many times as they wish, provided they still meet the age and educational eligibility criteria for that year.


Exam Pattern — Two Tiers, No Interview

The selection process consists of two main stages: Tier 1 and Tier 2. While Tier 1 is qualifying in nature, the marks obtained by a candidate in Tier 2 are used to determine the final merit list and job allocation.

Tier 1 (Prelims — Qualifying Stage):

  • Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • Questions: 100 MCQs
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Total Marks: 200
  • Sections: General Intelligence & Reasoning (25Q/50 marks), General Awareness (25Q/50 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (25Q/50 marks), English Comprehension (25Q/50 marks)
  • Negative Marking: 0.5 marks per wrong answer
  • Note: Tier 1 marks are NOT counted in final merit — only qualifying

Tier 2 (Mains — Merit Stage):

  • Paper 1 (Compulsory for all posts): Mathematical Abilities + Reasoning + English Language + General Awareness + Computer Knowledge — 390 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Paper 2 (For JSO post only): Statistics — 200 marks, 2 hours
  • Paper 3 (For AAO post only): General Studies — Finance & Economics — 200 marks, 2 hours
  • Negative Marking: 1 mark per wrong answer in Paper 1; 0.5 per wrong in Paper 2/3

Post-Wise Salary — What You Actually Earn

Here’s a realistic picture of in-hand monthly salary for the most popular posts at the time of joining:

  • AAO / Assistant Accounts Officer: ₹62,000–₹70,000/month (metro posting)
  • ASO (CSS / MEA / IB): ₹58,000–₹65,000/month
  • Inspector IT / Customs / Excise: ₹55,000–₹62,000/month
  • Junior Statistical Officer: ₹52,000–₹58,000/month
  • Tax Assistant: ₹38,000–₹44,000/month
  • Senior Secretariat Assistant: ₹36,000–₹42,000/month

These are current estimates including DA, HRA, and standard allowances. Actual amounts vary by city of posting.


How to Apply — OTR Registration Is Essential

SSC requires all candidates to complete One Time Registration (OTR) before applying for any SSC exam.

If you haven’t done your OTR yet:

  1. Visit ssc.gov.in
  2. Click on “Register” under OTR
  3. Provide your personal, educational, and contact details
  4. Upload photograph and signature
  5. Save your Application Number and Password securely

Once your OTR is complete, applying for SSC CGL 2026 will take under 10 minutes when the notification is released.


Preparation Strategy — Start Now, Not When the Notification Drops

Candidates are advised to start with understanding the SSC CGL exam pattern and syllabus, prepare a good study plan covering all subjects, practice previous year question papers, give mock tests, maintain consistency, and follow current affairs daily.

If you start today — 6 weeks before Tier 1:

Week 1–2: Quantitative Aptitude foundation — number system, percentage, profit & loss, time & work, ratio, averages, CI/SI, geometry basics. Practice 30 questions daily.

Week 3: English — reading comprehension, grammar rules (error spotting, sentence correction, fill in the blanks), vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, idioms). Read one editorial daily.

Week 4: Reasoning — analogies, series, coding-decoding, blood relations, syllogism, Venn diagrams, puzzles. Practice 30 questions daily.

Week 5: General Awareness — current affairs (Jan 2025–April 2026), static GK (polity, history, geography, science, economy). 1 hour daily.

Week 6: Full mock tests — minimum 3 per week. Analyse every wrong answer. Revise weak areas only.

Target score for a strong Tier 1: 145–160 marks out of 200
