What Is PM Kisan Samman Nidhi?
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan) is one of the most important government schemes for Indian farmers. Launched in 2019, the scheme provides financial support to small and marginal farmers to help them manage their farming expenses and household needs more easily. Under this scheme, eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 every year, which is directly transferred to their bank account in three equal installments of ₹2,000 each. The amount is credited through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and eliminating middlemen. shiksha
Since the launch of the scheme in 2019, ₹3.69 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers’ accounts through multiple instalments. For over 85% of Indian farmers who own less than two hectares of land, PM-KISAN has been a lifeline.
Eligibility — Who Qualifies for PM Kisan?
PM Kisan benefits all landholding farmer families. However, the following categories are explicitly excluded:
Institutional landholders, taxpayers, government officials, and high-income pensioners are excluded from the scheme.
Specifically excluded categories include:
- Former and current holders of constitutional posts (President, Governor, Ministers, MPs, MLAs)
- Current and retired employees of Central/State government (excluding multi-tasking staff, Class IV, and Group D)
- Individuals who paid income tax in the last assessment year
- Professionals (doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants) practicing their profession
- Retirees drawing pensions above ₹10,000 per month
All other small and marginal landholding farmer families are eligible. Importantly, farmers in urban areas are also eligible if they hold agricultural land.
How to Check Your PM Kisan Payment Status
This is the most common question farmers ask. Here’s the exact process:
Method 1 — Official Portal:
- Visit pmkisan.gov.in
- Click on “Farmers Corner” → “Beneficiary Status”
- Enter your Aadhaar Number or Mobile Number or Account Number
- Click “Get Data” — your payment history and current status will appear
Method 2 — PM Kisan Mobile App:
- Download the PMKISAN App from Google Play Store
- Log in using your Aadhaar number
- Check payment status and installment history
Method 3 — Missed Call Service: Give a missed call to 011-24300606 from your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. You will receive an SMS with your payment status.
Understanding Your Payment Status
“Payment Pending” means your eligibility has been verified and approved by the state government, but the current installment has not yet been released nationally by the Central Government. This is a normal status — not a rejection. Once the installment is released, your payment will be processed within 2–3 working days.
Other statuses and what they mean:
- Payment Success — ₹2,000 has been transferred to your bank account
- FTO Generated, Payment Confirmation Pending — Payment is processing; will reflect in 2–5 days
- Rejected — Your application was rejected; see below for how to fix this
Why Farmers Don’t Receive PM Kisan — 6 Most Common Reasons
Non-receipt of the PM-Kisan installment usually occurs due to incomplete e-KYC, Aadhaar not linked to the bank account, incorrect bank details, land record mismatch, or inclusion under the exclusion category.
Here is a detailed breakdown of each issue and its fix:
1. e-KYC Not Completed This is the single most common reason for non-payment. To complete e-KYC, go to pmkisan.gov.in → Farmers Corner → e-KYC → Enter Aadhaar number → Receive OTP on your Aadhaar-registered mobile → Enter OTP → Submit. Alternatively, download the PM Kisan app and use the Face Authentication option. You can also visit the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) for assistance.
2. Aadhaar Not Linked to Bank Account Visit your bank branch with your Aadhaar card and passbook. Request Aadhaar seeding in your bank account. This is a one-time process and typically takes 48–72 hours.
3. Incorrect Bank Details If your IFSC code, account number, or bank name is incorrect in the portal, the payment gets returned. Update your bank details by visiting the PM Kisan portal → “Farmers Corner” → “Updation of Self Registered Farmer.”
4. Land Record Mismatch If the land records in your state revenue department don’t match your PM Kisan registration details, visit your local Patwari or Tehsildar office to get the land records corrected and re-verified.
5. Wrong Mobile Number If your Aadhaar-linked mobile number has changed, visit the nearest CSC to update it, as the portal requires OTP verification on the registered number.
6. Name in Exclusion Category If you or any member of your family falls under the excluded categories (former government employee, income taxpayer, etc.), your application will be rejected. This rejection cannot be appealed — it is per scheme eligibility rules.
How to Register for PM Kisan — New Farmers
If you are an eligible farmer who has not yet registered for PM Kisan:
The procedure of online registration for the PM-Kisan scheme is as follows: Go to the PM-Kisan portal at pmkisan.gov.in. Scroll down to the Farmers Corner and click on the New Farmer Registration option. Select Rural Farmer Registration or Urban Farmer Registration. Enter your Aadhaar Number, select your state, enter the captcha, and click Search. If your details are not found, you will be prompted to register by clicking Yes. Fill in all required details including your name, address, bank account details, IFSC code, and land details, then submit.
You can also register at your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC). Over 5 lakh CSCs are operational across India and can assist with registration, e-KYC, and status verification.
Farmer ID — The New Addition in 2026
The government has been rolling out the Farmer ID initiative as part of the AgriStack digital infrastructure. Digital tools like Kisan eMitra, a voice-based AI chatbot, and AgriStack are being implemented to offer farmers personalised and timely help, making Indian farming ready for the future. FreeJobAlert
Farmers who obtain a Farmer ID will have all their agricultural data — land records, scheme benefits, credit history, and crop information — linked to a single digital identity, making future government support faster and more targeted.
The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme is not a large amount by urban income standards — but for crores of Indian farmers, ₹2,000 every four months directly impacts their ability to buy seeds, fertilisers, and manage basic household needs without falling into debt cycles. Making sure you receive every installment you are entitled to is important — and this guide gives you everything you need to do exactly that.
