How to Write a Resume That Gets Shortlisted in India 2026: Complete Guide for Freshers and Professionals

Here is an uncomfortable truth: most resumes in India — even from genuinely talented candidates — are rejected within 60 seconds of being opened. Not because the candidate isn’t good enough. But because the resume fails to communicate that goodness quickly, clearly, and in the format recruiters and their systems expect.

In 2026, resume writing in India has a new set of rules — shaped by Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), AI-powered recruitment software, and recruiters who receive 200+ applications for every opening. This guide will show you exactly how to build a resume that passes both the machine and the human.


Why Most Indian Resumes Fail — The Hard Truth

Before we build the right resume, understand why most fail:

Failure 1 — Objectives nobody reads. The classic “To seek a challenging position where I can utilise my skills and contribute to organisational growth” objective wastes your most valuable real estate — the top of page one. No recruiter reads this. It contributes nothing.

Failure 2 — Responsibilities without results. “Responsible for managing social media accounts” says nothing. “Grew Instagram following from 2,000 to 18,000 in 6 months through Reels-first content strategy” says everything.

Failure 3 — ATS rejection before human eyes. Most companies use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) to filter resumes before a recruiter sees them. ATS cannot read tables, graphics, two-column layouts, headers/footers, or fancy fonts. Beautifully designed Canva resumes with sidebars and icons often get auto-rejected.

Completed internships at two early-stage startups, delivering an AI-based inventory prediction model that reduced overstock by 23%. Seeking a full-time role in data science where I can combine analytical skills with real-world business impact.”

For an experienced professional: “Marketing professional with 6 years of experience driving growth for D2C brands. Led digital campaigns generating ₹12 crore in revenue across Google, Meta, and email channels in FY 2025–26. Currently seeking a senior performance marketing role in a high-growth startup or FMCG brand.”


Section 3: Skills

List skills in a clean, ATS-readable format — not a tag cloud or icon-based graphic. Recruiters also search for keyword matches, so include the exact terminologies used in the job description you’re applying for.

Group them logically:

  • Technical Skills: Python, SQL, TensorFlow, Google Ads, GA4, Tally ERP, AutoCAD
  • Soft Skills: Keep these minimal and specific — “Cross-functional collaboration,” “Data-driven decision making” are fine. “Good communication skills” is meaningless.
  • Languages: English (Fluent), Hindi (Native), Tamil (Conversational)

Section 4: Work Experience (Reverse Chronological Order)

  • Include: UG degree, PG degree if any, and 12th standard (for freshers only)

Section 8: Extra-Curricular / Achievements (Optional)

Include if truly impressive: National-level sports, published articles, open-source contributions, competition awards, leadership roles in student bodies. Avoid generic “participated in cultural events” type entries.


ATS Optimisation — How to Beat the Bots

  1. Use keywords from the job description. If the JD says “Google Analytics 4” — your resume must say “Google Analytics 4,” not “web analytics tool” or “GA.”
  2. Standard section headings. ATS recognises “Work Experience,” “Education,” “Skills.” It may not recognise “My Journey,” “Where I’ve Been,” or “Expertise.”
  3. No images, tables, or text boxes. All content must be in the main body as plain text.
